Stillness in Motion

LIV Design Challenge 2024, designed in collaboration with Sarah Klukas.

Facilitating a deep connection to the present moment, ‘stillness in motion’ is about finding a state of meditative flow while being fully invested in the here and now; acknowledging the constant movement of the world, and choosing to embody a sense of stillness. The subtle tension between motion and stillness builds a feeling of weightlessness like floating in water, inviting reflection and pause as one moment leads into the next. Curved forms, continuous lines, and grounding textures mark the space, creating rhythm and balance; while a sense of informality provides a calming environment.

The outdoor patio space provides a holistic expression of the concept of ‘stillness in motion’ through its unique attention to the senses. Portable lights and glass bird feeders for the sense of sight, wind chimes for the sense of sound, upholstered cushions, blankets, and warm electric heaters for the sense of touch, flowers for the sense of smell, and herbs for the sense of taste. These small touches throughout invite a meditative awareness of one's own body and mind that facilitates a connection to the present. Plants and bird feeders invite nature onto the patio, offering a connection to the natural world, while seating for guests fosters a strong connection with friends and family. Through each of these connections - to the present moment, the natural world around us, and the people we love most - stillness in motion is about the simple joy of being here now.
